When you register for a study, and while the study is in progress, you will always see Ethica logo (a blue puzzle piece) on the top left corner of your Android device.
If you open the app, you will see the information about that study categorized under three tabs:
- About: In this section you can read about the study, what research lab is organizing the study, what sort of data they collect, for what purpose they will be using the data, and for how long the study continues. From here, you will also have an option to leave a study, if you decide to do so. You can read more about leaving study in Leaving a Study.
- Streams: Streams are sources of data which is available to a study through Ethica. Each study, depending on their purpose, can pick what streams of data they need to have access to. Ethica lists these streams and explain what each mean. While the study is in progress, data from these streams are collected, encrypted, and uploaded automatically. You can put this process on hold anytime you want. You can read more about this in Snoozing the App section.
While Ethica can be configured to collect different types of data needed for research from the phone, using the sensors embedded inside the device, it only collects data from the streams mentioned in this section. No other data is collected from Ethica under any circumstances.
- Actions: Some studies require you to perform certain actions while being part of the study. If your study does not require any action, you will not see this section in your home page. You can read more about these actions in section.
Snoozing the App
While you are part of a study, Ethica periodically collects the data specified under Streams section, usually once every five minutes. If at some point you prefer to stop this data collection, you can snooze the app, using the snooze icon on the top right corner of the screen.
When you press snooze button, the app goes to sleep for 1 hour. During this one hour, you will see the following message on your home screen:
During this one hour, Ethica does not collect any data nor it will ask you any survey questions. When the one hour period is passed, the Ethica resumes its operation. You can tap on snooze button again, to put the app to sleep for another hour. You can do this as many times as needed.
Opting Out from a Stream Permanently
When a study is requesting some streams of data to be collected automatically during your participation, they can specify whether collecting that data is mandatory or optional. If your Streams page looks like this, it means all these data are mandatory, and as part of your participation, you are required to provide all these data.
If one or more streams of data are marked as optional, you will see a switch next to them under Streams tab, where you can turn them off or on.
Keeping the switch on (the default behaviour), allows Ethica to continue collecting data from that stream of data, while turning the switch off will stop data collection from that stream.
Unlike Snoozing the App feature, turning a stream off from here is permanent. The stream will not switch back on until you explicitly turn it back on again.
If you are participating in more than one study, and you turn off an stream which both studies collect data from, Ethica stops collecting data from that stream for both studies. As of now, you cannot turn off a stream for one study, and keep the same stream on for another study.
